Find out the whole story of "Fly High!" and its characters!

Ben Perez, a normal, Mexican, 15-year-old boy, has lived with his parents on a farm all his life, but when a huge corporate company manages to buy their property, moving in with his cousins isn’t exactly easy. His cousin, Preston, isn’t the most exciting primo, and only wants to be popular, and unfortunately, Ben’s peers at school aren’t too fond of him either. But, one day, during school, when an unexpected chemical spills all over Ben, it changes his life forever. Ben is now known as Jet, the hero of his city, with only Preston knowing his true identity, and promising each other to keep it a secret. However, when one of Ben’s peers, Jane, accidentally leaks his identity online, Preston is the opposite of pleased. As his jealousy over Ben conquers him, and his hunger for fame and likability grows, he decides to get powers of his own. How will this brawl end up? With broken friendships, jealous peers, and humor, the musical “Fly High!” presents an extraordinary story of how everyone should matter, and be cared about no matter what.

THE JOURNEY TO MAKING "FLY HIGH!"

03

Know how the exceptional musical was made!

It all started summer of 2020 when covid was spreading like a wildfire and we were all locked inside of our homes. At that time, I just wanted something to do. Then the idea hit me. I would make my own musical! So, I told my friend, CB (now my current editor and advisor for "Fly High!")  and she responded in "That's awesome! What's it about?" That was the problem. I didn't know what it would be about yet. So I quickly came up with an idea to send to my friend. "It'll be about a superhero who moves to a city and gets powers! But his cousin becomes jealous of him so he gets powers of his own." And that was the birth of "Fly High!" Not a full-fledged plot yet, but hey, we're off to a great start!

After that day, I started working on the plot and the script non-stop on my computer. CB was an enormous help in providing ideas and editing the story. It was a decent script for a young girl on google docs that eventually made its way to over 80 pages with 9 different and dynamic characters. Throughout the whole process, I also wrote and produced 14 original songs that took place at different parts of the story. The Apple Notes App and Google Docs were my best friends for lyrics. As for producing, I utilized Garage Band and learned how to use it for the first time ever, making tracks for each of the songs in the musical.

The musical was finished! But there was one problem. As I got older, I noticed it wasn't professional enough. The writing was cheezy, some characters lacked development, and so, naturally, I wasn't pleased. So then began the rewriting process. It wasn't easy tackling school's busy assignments, and managing what life had to offer for a teenage girl all while editing a script for a musical, but I managed to do it. I even updated all of the tracks on Garageband to make them sound more professional now that I had become more familiar with the software. 2 songs were cut and the musical was off to a better start.

But there was another issue. The musical was not written in a traditional movie musical format. So then a year later, I began rewriting the whole musical in the new format and fixing wholes in the plot line, coming out to an over 120-page final draft. We are at the finish line, but it isn't crossed yet. Songs need to be updated with Logic Pro, my new music-producing software, and singers need to be found to record a demo album for the musical. We'll get there eventually, I know we will, but we've come a long way and that's something to be proud of already.

It's now currently November 25th, 4 months after I wrote my progress on this musical. Since then, I've finalized all of the songs on Logic Pro, even adding a new song, "Make Believe," along with a "Make Believe" Reprise; I've also found a cast to record the demo album for the musical. Recording the songs for the album is still a work in progress, but I'm so proud of how far this project has come and am looking forward to see how high it will fly.
